Update on the Iraq War...

On DEADLINE from USA Today reports:

Today in Baghdad, a series of bomb blasts in a shopping district killed 13 people and wounded 72. The Associated Press reports "at least 17 troops have been killed in combat since Saturday, including eight U.S. soldiers who died in gunbattles and bomb blasts Monday in Baghdad — the most killed in a single day in the capital since July 2005."

The Pentagon says 2,716 troops have died in Iraq, with another 20,687 wounded in action. The United Nations reported that about 6,600 Iraqi civilians were killed in July and August.

In a story Monday, the Associated Press reported that "Southern Afghanistan has been rocked by the worst outbreak of violence since the ouster of Taliban regime in the U.S.-led invasion in 2001. Militants have increasingly resorted to suicide attacks and roadside bombs."

In light of recent news stories and current events, I thought I would give the Church's teaching on the duties and responsibilities of our civil authorities.

In Brief:

2234 God's fourth commandment also enjoins us to honour all who for our good have received authority in society from God. It clarifies the duties of those who exercise authority as well as those who benefit from it.

Duties of civil authorities
2235 - 2237

The duties of citizens
2238 - 2243

The political community and the Church
2244-2246

2254 Public authority is obliged to respect the fundamental rights of the human person and the conditions for the exercise of his freedom.

2255 It is the duty of citizens to work with civil authority for building up society in a spirit of truth, justice solidarity and freedom.

2256 Citizens are obliged in conscience not to follow the directives of civil authorities when they are contrary to the demands of the moral order. "We must obey God rather than men" (Acts of the Apostles, 5: 29)

2257 Every society's judgements and conduct reflect a vision of man and his destiny. Without the light the Gospel sheds on God and man, societies easily become totalitarian.
