Socialist Catholic News for October 6th and 7th

Former Cabinet Minister David Blunkett made a stunning revelation Saturday, suggesting that at the time of Iraq invasion, the British government attempted to “rein in U.S. policy in Iraq from the outset of the March 2003 invasion but found itself powerless to do so,” according to Reuters.

Like the pedophilia and pederasty scandal that shook the Church, the “Foley Scandal” is beginning to widen in scope. It seems that the party of “family values” harbours child molesters while encouraging the hatred and discrimination of gays, lesbians, transgendered individuals, and others. Once again, Republican rhetoric endorses “gay-bashing” Foley while at the same time making excuses for his illegal and immoral actions. Conservatives often wrongly link Foley’s sexual orientation (gay) with his sexual preference (juveniles); I shudder to think if this story would have come to light if Foley’s sexual orientation was straight. No wonder it looks like Democrats are set to take control of Congress.

North Korea’s threat to test a nuclear weapon this weekend still stands; shots have been fired across the Korean border.

Anna Politkovskaya, a social activist and investigative reporter was killed in her apartment home Saturday. It is suspected (i.e. very likely) that she was killed for her work, especially the documentation of abuses at the hands of military and government officials.

Iraqi forces have imposed a 24 hour curfew while conducting “police searches for insurgents and weapons”. This is part of the President’s plan to train Iraqi forces to take care of insurgents. This has significant historical parallel to the failed Tet Offensive of 1968; remember that the Tet Offensive is what cost the Democratic Party and LBJ political power.

It looks like individuals ages 18-30 could form the most important demographic in the upcoming National elections. The .pdf of the poll data here.

Verse
But thanks be to God who always leads us in victory in Christ Jesus and manifests through us the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere.

-- 2 Cor 2:14

Reflection
The Rosary represents a symbol of Mary’s graces.

Christians invoke her as “Queen of Most Holy Rosary”, which conjures up the brilliant conquests of faith over evil and over religious ignorance.

-- Pope Pius XII

Prayer
O Mary, you are Our Lady of the Rosary.

Enable me to share in the spiritual victories over evil that you accomplish with Jesus’ help through the Rosary.

Amen.

Catholic News of the Day:

The Reprieve organisation in the UK is now reporting that the US was holding and abusing prisoners on US Air Force and Army bases in Germany. The German government denies that claim; the US Government has not commented on the claims yet.

Read more about the story from CBS News here.

Today the Pentagon stated that it would investigate claims that prisoner torture was commonplace in Gitmo and other locations. The most appaling thing about this report is that the torture and abuse was so widespread and "part of the culture" of the detainee camps that abusers spoke freely about how they treated prisoners; Marines and others who abused and tortured individuals felt that they had done nothing wrong. The abusers felt that they were safe and that there would be no consequence for their actions. This must change.

The Amish school-house story is still developing... here is the story of how one of the girls, Marian Fisher 13, literally lived out the message of the lives of Jesus and Mary by offering to suffer in the stead of her peers. Marian offered herself freely, in the hopes that the gunman would free all the other girls.

Please pray a rosary for the girls, the Amish familes affected, and for the family of the gunman that they may all find peace and comfort in this tragic time.

Update on the Iraq War...

On DEADLINE from USA Today reports:

Today in Baghdad, a series of bomb blasts in a shopping district killed 13 people and wounded 72. The Associated Press reports "at least 17 troops have been killed in combat since Saturday, including eight U.S. soldiers who died in gunbattles and bomb blasts Monday in Baghdad — the most killed in a single day in the capital since July 2005."

The Pentagon says 2,716 troops have died in Iraq, with another 20,687 wounded in action. The United Nations reported that about 6,600 Iraqi civilians were killed in July and August.

In a story Monday, the Associated Press reported that "Southern Afghanistan has been rocked by the worst outbreak of violence since the ouster of Taliban regime in the U.S.-led invasion in 2001. Militants have increasingly resorted to suicide attacks and roadside bombs."

In light of recent news stories and current events, I thought I would give the Church's teaching on the duties and responsibilities of our civil authorities.

In Brief:

2234 God's fourth commandment also enjoins us to honour all who for our good have received authority in society from God. It clarifies the duties of those who exercise authority as well as those who benefit from it.

Duties of civil authorities
2235 - 2237

The duties of citizens
2238 - 2243

The political community and the Church
2244-2246

2254 Public authority is obliged to respect the fundamental rights of the human person and the conditions for the exercise of his freedom.

2255 It is the duty of citizens to work with civil authority for building up society in a spirit of truth, justice solidarity and freedom.

2256 Citizens are obliged in conscience not to follow the directives of civil authorities when they are contrary to the demands of the moral order. "We must obey God rather than men" (Acts of the Apostles, 5: 29)

2257 Every society's judgements and conduct reflect a vision of man and his destiny. Without the light the Gospel sheds on God and man, societies easily become totalitarian.

Marian Meditation of the Day:

Verse
Reflect on what I am telling you,

for the Lord will give you understanding in all things.

-- 2 Tim 2:7

Reflection
Happy are those who recite the Holy Rosary with understanding.

They will learn all that is of faith, light, hope, and love in it.

-- St. Clement Hofbauer

Prayer
O Mary, your Rosary is a School of the Faith. Let me recite it with understanding, so that I may grow in faith, light, hope, and love.

Amen.

News Stories of the Day:

"That's my Dad" on BagnewsNotes.com This story is very sad, and illustrates the harm that the Iraq War is causing here in America. From the story:

"The real emotional cost of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts on U.S. military personnel and their families can never be truthfully told by warm and fuzzy Flat Daddy feature stories found recently in the Boston Globe and The New York Times. The media, in typical fashion, is masking the reality and angst these families now face. In other words, the pictures and words turn tumult into triviality.

"What gives this Flat Daddy picture news value is not relevancy in terms of the cost of war, but quirkiness and novelty.

"What boils beneath the warm and fuzzy, feel-good, “I miss daddy or mommy” story is more alarming. The war is becoming trivialized.

"Beneath the surface of a boy and his Flat Daddy is the reality that daddy exists in a liminal state. Flat Daddy is caught in the vice grip of human memory. Flat Daddy and his real-life double somewhere in the desert exist in an ominous position between ambiguity and indeterminacy -- no news story can ever speak truth to this sort of power.

"What appears at first a light-hearted picture of families coping with loss is in fact, a decisive and profound image of sadness and despair."

Thank you Dennis for posting such a thought-provoking and moving article.

More about the war in Lebanon: warning, the picture contained in this article is a real picture of the aftermath of the bombing of Cana. It is very graphic. If you are sensitive to picture of death and loss, please don't click here. It is disturbing to me that the very town where Jesus performed his first miracle at Mother Mary's urging is the site of such horrific loss.

The Ancient of Days took his seat...

Thousands upon thousands attended to him,

and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.

-- Dan 7: 9-10

Reflection

This very honorable Virgin is an abyss of virtues.

She precedes the Seraphim and is over the Cherubim!

Prayer
O Mary, you are the Queen of Angels.

Grant me the grace to be truly devoted to the Angels,

especially my Guardian Angel,

and to follow all the inspirations they bring me from your Divine Son.

Amen.

Feast of the Day:

Guardian Angels

First Reading: Exodus 23:20-23
Psalm: Psalm 91:1-6, 10-11
Gospel: Matthew 18:1-5, 10

The garden of the Lord, brethren, includes - yes, it truly includes - includes not only the roses of martyrs but also the lilies of virgins, and the ivy of married people, and the violets of widows. There is absolutely no kind of human beings, my dearly beloved, who need to despair of their vocation; Christ suffered for all. It was very truly written about him: who wishes all men to be saved, and to come to the acknowledgement of the truth.

-- St. Augustine
